The rule of thumb that I use is that "gold", "aged" and "dark" are synonyms for rums that have been aged on oak. You usually won't use rums older than 8 years in a cocktail. Rarely, "black" rum is mentioned, and these are taken to mean the artificially-darkened rums like Gosling's, Myer's, etc.
